    April 24

    I got nuthin

I’m sitting here trying to think of something to write.  I don’t know why I haven’t been writing.  I miss it, but I am so unmotivated to get on here and write lately.  There is so much going on in my life and work that I just don’t take the time.  I can’t blog at work.  I can’t chat on MSN or listen to Launchcast.  I miss these things.  I miss the people I used to chat with.  I miss the music I used to listen to.  Last weekend I found, in a used CD store, the album Emotional Technology by BT.  Hadn’t listened to it since I stopped listening to Launchcast and it was great to hear it again.   The song Somnambulist is awesome!  So my new mission is to get lots of new (old) music that I have missed for the past 5 months.   I just read over what I wrote there about not being able to blog & chat at work.  I’m not trying to dis my new job.  I actually really like it.  I’m coordinating lots of charity fundraising and volunteer events within a large organization, which is really cool.  I have a large network of people who are really appreciative of what I am doing.  Even though I have an ideological aversion to corporations and all that they stand for, I have discovered that there are things I really like about working for them.  Perks are nice.  Also working with a lot of people on really large projects is a big plus for me.  Perhaps I have some strange sense that by working on Corporate Social Responsibility I can actually make a difference.  Perhaps I am just fooling myself there.  At least it is good to like my job for now.   I think perhaps that blogging was filling a void I felt when I left working for a large corporation.  The last place I worked had only 11 employees, and when you have such a small group, it is hard to ignore the person with the freaky personality - you know the one; there's one in every workplace - the one who might have a temper tantrum or go off on you at any moment.  At least in a large organization there is a buffer against that shit because there are so many other people you can interact with.  I am a people person and I like having a large network of people to interact with.  When I went to work at that last little company I think I really missed having that network, so blogging filled the void.  Now that I am working for a large corp again, I have that network back again in my daily life, so perhaps that is one of the reasons I am not turning to blogging as much.  Of course, not being able to blog at work puts a major damper on it as well.  Let’s be honest…I used to spend a couple of hours a day blogging while at work.  Simply can’t do that now.  And so very often I am too exhausted after the kids are asleep to want to get on the computer in the evening, which really sucks because I have lost a creative outlet and clearly my writing is suffering for it.  So, I guess the only thing to do is stop complaining about not having a creative outlet and actually use this wonderful creative outlet that is here for me.  K.  That’s what I’ll do.    (Please excuse this rediculously self-ingulgent meandering ramble.  I'll write about something real next time, I swear!)

    I laughed at this quote:

"Strength is the capacity to break a chocolate bar into four pieces with your bare hands--and then just eat one of the pieces." ~Judith Viorst

I laughed especially becuase right now I am on day 6 of a cleansing program-no sugar, dairy, red meat, alcohol, or chemicals. I am doing really well with it!  But that is fodder for another blog.  Gotta get up early tomorrow and go for a run.  G'night. :)

    October 07

    Well this is kinda cool

Recently, I haven't been focusing on stats as much as I did when I first started this blog, but I have just passed a milestone, so I thought I would share.  15,000 hits.   The hit that put me over the top.....a link from my friend Jorge - the one who encouraged me to start a blog in the first place.

Since I have been very focussed on exercise and eating right, my friend Cheryl thought I needed to clear up some of my misconceptions about dieting and exercise.   Thanks, Cheryl!

    So here you go...

    HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO . Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about
    food and diets.

And remember: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!"

    History Exercise

I've been tagged by Jorge to do this.

    1. Delve into your blog archive.

    2. Find your 23rd post.

    3. Find the fifth sentence.

    4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.

So here is the 5th sentence of my 23rd entry:

"Spent all day Sunday in bed or on the couch, feeling like I had a 100 pound weight on my head and like I had been through 15 rounds in the boxing ring."

That was a pretty good post, actually.  It was quite a while ago when I was a newbie blogger!   If you feel brave enough to read the rest of the post, go here.

Interesting things happening in the Blogosphere

Disclaimer: This is a bullshit post where I dont actually write anything of my own, but just refer to other people who HAVE written something interesting!

I have been asked to be a guest contributor on Thou Shall Not Suck.  This is truly an honour for me.  I was shocked when I got the email from Mark.  Mr Thou Shall Not Suck  has a huge following.  I mean, he gets almost 3000 hits in 4 days!  Did you see the list of people he has listed me with???  *sweat rolls down forehead*.  I just hope I can do his space justice. Thanks so much Mark!  I hope all goes well with your back surgery; that you recover quickly and come back soon.

I’ve joined Violent Margie's challenege.  The PHATTYNOMORE CHALLENGE!.  The challenge is to lose 10 pounds by Halloween.  I really need to do this. I've been trying to get more fit, but have had limited success.   Perhaps I need a kick in the ass like a public declaration to make me knuckle down and do it.  Either that or I'll just fail miserably and suffer public humiliation.  Hey sounds like a laugh fest to me!

Jay at Kill the Goat has written a laugh-out-loud hilarious entry explaining exactly why men have nipples.  Actually she provides several explanations.  Check it out. It's called Nippola Nippola Nippola Nippola Nippolaaaa!

    Then go read Signa's too.

These are some of the best blog entries I have ever read. (And I've been reading blogs for about 4 years!) They actually made me cry.

What??? You're still here?  Go!  Go read it!  Go Now!

    Blog for Hope

I saw a new blog feature this morning on Yahoo!.  It's called Blog for Hope.  Check it out and tell me what you think.

The concept is: get a bunch of celebrities to create blogs dedicated to personal stories about how cancer has affected their lives.  This is to raise awareness about cancer and allow a forum for people to share their experiences with cancer.    This is a noble idea - in theory.    It looks like they just launched this new feature yesterday, and already there are tons of comments on these people's first blog entries.   Like many noble ideas, it has quickly been corrupted.

I read through several of these blogs as well as the comments that people have posted.  Most of these celebrities have direct experiences with cancer - either they have/ had it or someone close to them had cancer.  Most of their stories are personal and seem genuine.  I think this makes these people seem less like "celebrities" and more like average human beings.   This is a good thing.

Then there's Hillary Clinton.  Her blog entry reads like an impersonal prepared political speech, written by one of her staff writers. It is clearly a political move on her part to be involved in this initiative.   The comments that ensue on her blog launch into a huge political discussion on everything from pharmaceutical companies to the war in Iraq to abortion.  There's even some evangelical type who goes on about how "Jesus will save you".   Personally I think that her blog and the ensuing discussion are an insult to anyone who has cancer or who lost someone due to cancer.

My maternal grandmother had breast cancer.  My paternal grandmother had uterine cancer.  I have an aunt and a cousin who both have breast cancer.  Odds are that my mother, my sister or I will get it in our lifetimes.  Does it affect me??  Hell yeah!  Do I want to see a bunch of people use this type of forum as an opportunity to get up on their soapboxes and spout their (poorly written) political views about Dubya or abortion or Jesus?  NO!

Check it out.  I'd like to hear your opinions on it.

    A Rant about Blog Etiquette

Some people just don’t get it.

Don’t bring your shit into my house or advertise on my space!

Jorge has taken issue with this in the past, as I’m sure, other bloggers have too.  See the section called Don’t Track Mud In My House on this post.

I have a peeve to discuss.  I have seen it on my blog and others’ blogs: people who add comments just to promote their own site or advertise for the products they are selling – and they do this without even commenting on the blog entry you have posted.  I have seen this more and more lately.  Mostly it’s been MSN bloggers promoting their own sites by copying & pasting something like this comment left on one of my entries:

“http://url removed …A Shanghai blog featuring news and views of great interest”

You know what?? If you can’t be bothered to read what I write, don’t leave a comment.  Don’t promote your space or whatever activity you have come up with just to raise your stats, while ignoring everything about my blog.  That is an insult.

Then I saw something even more insidious.   Yesterday, on our friend Dave’s blog, some asswipe is actually advertising his shit!  See the comments here.   This pisses me off!

So here are some suggestions for commenting on my blog:

    1)  Don’t promote your latest stat-raising activity unless you are actually commenting on my post.   (Hey, I actually like participating in some of these activities, but if you want people to participate, it’s best to promote it on your own site.)

    2)  Don’t promote your religion on my site  (I’ve got nothing against religion and I attend church regularly, but I will seek it out where and when I want to.)

    3)  Don’t promote your porn on my site (I’ve got nothing against porn, either.  Just let me & my readers find it for ourselves, if we want to.  That’s not what my blog is for.)

Hey, if you don't follow my suggestions, I can just delete your comment.

    There!

    Rant over.

    Bloggers Lament

I've been feeling sick for a few days, and while I've been able to drag myself through the workday, I have been passing out around 9pm each night.  Hence, not much blogging activity going on.

Anyway, I noticed a trackback to the site of las toRRes gemilas who liked my Virus Warning about the WORK virus.  I love it when I see trackbacks.  Thanks for sharing, and for giving me credit!  Of course, I didn't write that thing....i just received it in an email from a friend.

Something else I liked on las toRRes gemilas' site was this poem which was written by: Crackers in Bed

    Blogger’s Lament

Sometimes it’s a joy, but sometimes of course,

Blogging can be a pain in the arse.

My mind is all misty and full of fog.

I sit here semi-conscious like a bump on a log

    Waiting for Inspiration…

It may be a minute. It may be a year.

It may take forever, but have no fear.

Sooner or later there’ll be a flash in my head

Signaling an idea, or the fact that I’m dead,

    Whichever comes first…

Folks keep looking in and dropping by -

Though I never understand exactly why -

To look over this truly awful stuff,

The bric-a-brac, flotsam, jetsam and fluff.

And some seem to like it…

So I guess I owe it to those who choose

To come by here and faithfully peruse

The words and pictures that appear on these pages.

(I publish this stuff, but I don’t get no wages -

    Only the wages of sin…)

Others seem just to go ahead and write.

They post stuff on Spaces both day and night.

There’s some really great writing, some of it’s swill.

Is it a labor of love, or an act of sheer will?

    It really doesn’t matter…

All that counts is to write and to post.

And see who can publish the best and the most.

To present their lives and their faces,

The goal is to appear on MSN Featured Spaces.

    (Sponsored by Volvo…)

But, alas, by being an old crusader,

Like Yogi Berra and even Ralph Nader,

I’ve written some comments about Spaces ads,

About how recycling your Volvo seems a mere fad.

    I won’t be a featured blogger…

At this point, I think I’ve plumbed the depths -

Milked this one dry for today, I guess.

That seems all I am able to pull out of my head.

I guess I’ll post this.  And tomorrow I’ll dread

    Doing this one more time…

I was talking to Amy yesterday about how sometimes the blogging seems to become just one more responsibility gnawing at you...  It shouldn't be like that.  However, since she doesn't need nearly as much sleep as I do, she spends a lot of time on the computer at night!

At first blogging was new & exciting.   Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy it...I especially enjoy the creative outlet that it allows me, that was missing from my life for so long....but sometimes it feels like an obligation.  I've noticed that vibe from others as well.....people apologizing for not visiting more often, apologizing for not posting.

Well...I'm turning over a new leaf.  From now on, I'm going to stop that.  I'll post when I can and visit when  I can and just enjoy it.  That's what it's for, isn't it?

I have signed up for Ethel's (previously known as violentmargie) Bitchy 101 class.  I will not stress out about blogging.  I have a life dammit!  I will try to be more of a bitch.................and this will bring me more happiness.      Hmmmmm.......ok...I'm trying to embrace this philosophy.......I really am.......we'll see how it goes.

Let me know how I am doing people!

So here's is violentmargie's advice.   (Sorry, Cheezmo, but I just can't get used to Ethel!)

     B1tchy 101 - Sign up today!

    hi

ok, so we must talk about something. I cannot ignore this issue any longer. Bloggers Block. Epidemic? i think not. it seems lately that more and more blvders are feeling stress around blogging..WTF PEOPLE?? STOP IT!!! Blogging is NOT a job, it should be a release, or a vent, or a laugh...you don't HAVE to write everyday, you don't need to succumb to BLOGGER'S PEER PRESSURE...people, you do not, and should not, feel totally overwhelmed by it. Perhaps you need a lesson in bitchiness by me? ok, then...here we go....learn it, live it, be it.

    BITCHY 101

    by violentmargie....

otherwise known as The Evil Mermaid Ethel...

    1) you are NOT required to write a blog every day.

    2) you are NOT required to visit every blvder's space every day.

    3) you are NOT required to comment EVER if you don't feel like it, or have nothing to say on that particular blog.

    4) you are NOT required to be nice at any time...MUAHAHHAHAA, that is my favourite!

    5) blogging is not a requirement. if it feels good, do it (or write it).

Good luck on this course, i wish you bitchiness , bitterness, , and anger. ...and that in turn will bring you happiness ...trust me

    bye.

So there it is.  I'll try to follow violentmargie's advice.  Although I am not as good at being a bitch as she.   You see, she pulls it off with such flair & humour!     *we're not worthy, we're not worthy*

Ah.... wheteva.  I'll just blog when I can.

    G'night y'all.

    Would you ever?

Jo§ephine has a cool game going on her blog.  Check it out.  Go Play.

    Would you ever?
Time to play WOULD YOU EVER?  All you have to do is answer the question the previous person asked ..ie -  WOULD YOU EVER GO RUNNING THROUGH THE SHOPPING MALL SCREAMING? (answer the question) and then post your “would you ever question...” the next person will answer your question ...and so on ...

you got the first one. :

Would you ever walk up to a stranger and pinch their butt?

    Why We Blog

I don't have time for a long post right now, but I just read something on Laura's site that beautifully and eloquently sums up why we blog and what we get from it.  She called it: The Kindness of Strangers.

To my family members, I'd appreciate it if you'd go read this.  I couldn't have said it any better.

I am really enjoying blogging as a means of self expression and a way to connect with other like-minded people.  Plus it provides a great impetus for writing.  I've written more in the past month & a half than I have in the previous year.  This is a really good thing!  All my old writing journals that I've started and stopped and started and stopped again are lying around at different places in my house.  Having this blog gives me the compulsion to write.  Sure it's not exactly mind-blowing philosophical truths, but I'm enjoying doing it and I'm told others are enjoying reading it.  It's all good.

    Quick Updates

Friday Night: I've got a girls night out tonight.   Heading downtown for tapas and sangria with some old friends.  Should be fun!

Tomorrow night is the grand opening of Jorge's Photography exhibit, so we'll be there to show our support and to check out his amazing photography.

Sunday is Mother's Day.  Gonna hang with the family, and then go out for dinner.

Should be a nice weekend.  The weather is supposed to be sunny and warm, so we'll spend a lot of it outside!  Have a good one, everybody!

Upcoming blog post entries that I am kicking around...

    • More on Sci-Fi
    • Upcoming movie version of the show "Firefly"...the movie will be called "Serenity"....with the original cast! ....ooooh can't wait, can't wait, can't wait!
    • Anti-racism education discussion.  Hubby just finished an essay on anti-racist education for the masters degree that he is working on.  I won't present you with the entire 22 pages, but he's given me permission to use excerpts as the framework for my discussion.

Oh yeah.....and if you didn't get a chance to read it, scroll down and read my post on Midwifery.  Sure it's kinda long, but it's a good one.  :)

    My little cuties

Oh and one last thing....I was looking through old photos and I just uploaded these.  They are soooo cute.  The first one is Jade when she was about 2-1/2, and the second one is Jasmine as a baby.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Well...fret no more! Submit your typo to Jorge and he’ll come up with a definition for it, making it a new word in the Figtionary!

    Interesting Stuff from blogland

    Top Blogs of 2004

Here is a site that will link you to the top blogs of 2004. Blog Pulse year in Review 2004.  Yes, I know this is stale material, but since I just discovered it, it's new to me!

Boing boing is the clear winner for the top blog, and is still an awesome site to visit.  I love this site.  Check it out.  Frequently.

The top read post was an interesting one called a word to the wise  by a blogger called anniesj.  It's kinda scary, actually.  This person talks about getting a visit to their home from the US Secret Service after writing a blog post expressing unfavorable opinions about George W Bush.  Anniesj has since deleted the original post that caused the furor.  But, it's sobering to note how much blogging can affect your life outside the blogosphere.

Another list says the Top cited people in blogland were:

    1. George W. Bush

    2. John Kerry

    3. Harry Potter

    4. Britney Spears

    5. Michael Moore

The top movies discussed in blogs was Fahrenheit 9/11 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  Both Awesome movies!

There's a lot of cool stuff here for bloggers and non-bloggers alike.  Check it out at Blog Pulse year in Review 2004.

    Weird Google Searches

Again, I just shake my head and grin at the google searches that bring people to my space.

Today there was the person who did a search for "timmy ho".  Hope they like what they found!

This search brought someone from Google.Uk to my space: "middle east "the future shop"

Another google search that brought someone here "urban legends don't lick envelopes".

Google Search - from google.uk  "wish     dishis"  Really...this brought someone to my space.   They got the post about Allowance for kids.

And finally, someone searching for: "Chocolate Martini's"

    Wicked!

More blogs created in the past 5 days, than the past 5 years!

This is from the blog of an MSN beta tester who calls himself Overdo, a math student at the University of Warwick, UK.

"Has blogging tipped? Oh, yeah. MSN Spaces, Mike Torres told me, has signed up more people in the past few days than existed in the first five years of the blogosphere."  Mike Torres is an MSN spaces developer.

If you are using MSN spaces and want to suggest improvements, go here.

(this previous info was included in a comment by Overdo on Pridi's blog)

What does MSN have planned for us?

Does anyone know what MSN intends to do with this?  I mean, really...if you have read something and know where this is going,  please leave a comment.

I think that they are going to continue to add more advertisements and/or eventually start charging us all for the use of our blogging space.  Of course, I think they will wait till they have suckered millions of us into the blogosphere and we are addicted to it.

This is Microsoft we're talking about here!  The same company that has mercilessly crushed every other competitor to cross its path.  There have been anti-trust law suits.  The same company that makes Windows operating systems, and releases new upgrades time and time again knowing they are full of bugs...for more info go here and here and here

And really...why do we all put up with a bumbling slow operating system such as windows?  Mark Morford puts it best in his article Why Does Windows Still Suck?  He compares the performance of Windows to the performance of a new car: "Here is your brand new car, sir. Drive it off the lot. Yay yay new car. Suddenly, new car shuts off. New car barely starts again and then only goes about 6 miles per hour and it belches smoke and every warning light on the dashboard is blinking on and off and the tires are screaming and the heater is blasting your feet and something smells like burned hair. You hobble back to the dealer, who only says, gosh, sorry, we thought you knew -- that's they way they all run. Enjoy!"

Obviously I am as hooked on MSN as the next geek. I'm using Windows.  I'm using Spaces.  I'm using Messenger.  I'm using MS Office.  At home and at work.

So....I really want to know what you think...not just a rant about the functionality of Spaces (not that I don't have fun ranting about that!)...but really where is MSN going with all of this?   Give me your comments & opinions.

(Now if we truly don't have freedom of expression on Spaces, this could piss them off....Hopefully I will still be here tomorrow. G'night y'all!)
