Anti-Racism Discussion - Glossary of Terms

Here is a list of terms that I will use throughout the discussion.  I will add other terms to the glossary as necessary.  This post will have a permalink in a sidebar on this site.

Racism

Racism has many different definitions. Historically, it has been defined as the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently according to their racial designation. Sometimes racism means beliefs, practices, and institutions that discriminate against people based on their perceived or ascribed race. There is a growing, but somewhat controversial, opinion that racism is a system of oppression -- a nexus of racist beliefs, whether explicit, tacit or unconscious; practices; organizations and institutions that combine to discriminate against and marginalize a class of people who share a common racial designation, based on that designation.

Hegemony

Hegemony is the dominance of one group over other groups, with or without the threat of force, to the extent that, for instance, the dominant party can dictate the terms of trade to its advantage; or more broadly, that cultural perspectives become skewed to favor the dominant group.

Ethnocentrism

Ethnocentrism (Greek ethnos ("nation" + -centrism) is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own culture. Many claim that ethnocentrism occurs in every society; ironically, ethnocentrism may be something that all cultures have in common.

Eurocentrism

Eurocentrism is the practice, conscious or otherwise, of placing emphasis on European (and, generally, Western) concerns, culture and values at the expense of those of other cultures. It is an instance of ethnocentrism, perhaps especially relevant because of its alignment with current and past real power structures in the world.

Marginalization

Marginalisation or marginalization (US) refers in general to the overt or subvert acts and trends within societies whereby those perceived as lacking function or desirable traits are killed or otherwise excluded from existing systems of protectionism, thereby limiting their means for survival.

Anti-racism

Anti-racism, like other general social attitudes, ideas and movements, has many variations and faces. At its simplest and least ideological, it consists simply in opposition to racism and racialism based on a sense that all races are basically the same, and we should all accept each other's differences. In more developed and ideological forms it tends to involve the belief that racism is both pernicious and socially pervasive, so that strong measures are called for to control and even eradicate it.

Hi there,

I am doing my degree in Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. This is my second year of studies. Quite a few times, I have encountered racism (I am Asian background) in campus. What I meant by racism here is, the local students (or English speakers) do not like to talk to me in the tutorial class. When they do talk, they would not have much eye-contact with me. I have a really bad feeling about that. I felt hurt, no confidence, not being respected, etc...

Of course, there are some friendly local students in campus.

I wish people can have open-minded to see the world and the people around them. I hope they can understand students who are from overseas.

Thank you very much for all of your kind attention. I just want to share with someone. (Coz I just encountered racism from a young female student).

Cheers,
TMY

This is an excellent post!!
It seems over the years one might think our attitudes have changed on racism.. however upon closer investigation it seems we are moving way too slowly.
When we look at companies and government top level positions it is very sad to see how we have not moved forward and that old attitudes still exist..
Very Sad
Thanks for writing on this subject.
Hugs
