Accuracy In Reporting - An Anti-Racism Rant

Let me start by saying that I feel very sorry for all the people who have lost their lives or lost their homes as a result of Hurricane Katrina.  The devastation is horrendous.   I was glancing through some pictures on Yahoo....They have photo albums that you can look through anytime there is a news event that generates a lot of photos.  You can check out the slide show here.

The pictures of the devastation in New Orleans are terrible.  Entire neighbourhoods under water.   Homes completely demolished.  Many people killed. Stories about bodies floating in the standing water or people drowning in their own homes.  It’s awful. I was really moved by one picture of a woman crying when she returned to see where her house had been in Biloxi, Mississippi.   Now there is just a pile of rubble.  Her pain was palpable.

But as I was going through the pictures (skipping the ones of George W's publicity photo ops, of course!), one of the pictures really stopped me in my tracks.   This one really pissed me off.  It was not the photo itself that bothered me.  It was the caption with the photo.

Here is the caption beside the picture that was apparently written by James Nielsen of AFP News:

"Looters hit a drug store in the French Quarter district of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana, following Hurricane Katrina. Fresh floods, fires and looting rode in the destructive wake of Hurricane Katrina, deepening a humanitarian crisis that left hundreds feared dead and sections of New Orleans submerged to the rooftops.(AFP/James Nielsen)"

    Here is the picture.

Can you see why I have a problem with this?  These people DO NOT look like they are looting!!!

I know there has been looting, and that is a terrible thing.  That some would stoop so low to take advantage of people who are already dealing with a disaster, is abominable.

However, this does not look like a picture of looting.   This store has yellow signs on the doors that say "Now Open" and the only people who are holding any merchandise have it in shopping bags. Do looters generally take the time to put their stuff neatly into shopping bags and then saunter casually out of the store with a contented look on their face???   Most of the people in the photo are not holding anything.  They are not running out of the store with loads of merchandise in their arms.  Most of them seem to be just milling about.   Is it any coincidence that all of the people in this photo are Black, and they have been dubbed "looters"?

Biased reporting like this just serves to further entrench racist attitudes and makes life more difficult for everyone.   Many white people will see this kind of thing, shake their heads and think, “See...there go those black people again, looting every time they get a chance.”  For Black people it’s just another example of the racism they experience every day from the mainstream media and from society at large. Another jab to add insult to injury.  I think it is disgusting.

    Also in Today's News:

It is heartening to see some movement in the right direction. That’s why the Toronto District School Board’s new measure to hire a watchdog to fight discrimination in schools is such a good idea.  The article in today’s Toronto Star gives the details.  Unfortunately you have to sign up for the Toronto Star to see the full text of their articles, so here is an excerpt from said article:

“Canada’s largest school board is poised to appoint a new equity watchdog to ensure students of all backgrounds are treated fairly, says Chair Sheila Ward.

The new senior position of ‘executive officer of equity’ for the Toronto District School Board will have ‘real teeth.’  Ward says, to deal with such lightning-rod issues as the suspension of black students and the creation of black-studies curriculum.

The move comes hard on the heels of criticisms – including a formal complain lodged last month by the Ontario Human Rights Commission – that the board treats black students more harshly than others under the province’s tough new code of conduct.

But Ward says the new post, which will report directly to new education director Gerry Connelly, sends a signal that the country’s most diverse school board is taking equal rights seriously.  Equity positions were largely dismantled under the funding formula introduced by the previous Conservative government.

“This person will have real clout and be very aggressive, front and centre, in driving equity, not only about suspensions and expulsions, but also issues from parent rights to Afro-centric curriculum,” said Ward yesterday.

The equity officer is to be named tonight at a board meeting.

Sources hint the job will go to veteran educator Lloyd McKell, long an outreach worker with the board’s diverse communities.”

While this is definitely a positive step in the right direction, I am a little skeptical about how effective it will be.  Will the Toronto School Board really want to acknowledge just how bad the problem is?  (and accoording to my friends who are teachers in Toronto, there is a serious problem to address!)  While this may affect some positive change in the future, it does not address the blatant racism you see continuing in the mainstream media right now.  *sigh*   Is there any hope for the human race?

Well said - and here are some realties from an accountant -

the chances are a lot of the stores in the New Orleans will write off their inventories due to flood damage as most of the good will be deemed unsalvagable. Insurance companies will pay for the damages - so the store owners will get compensated. I am getting a bit tired of the sensationalizing of this story and the finger pointing. I have yet to see any dim witted politician or journalist point this truth out.

Speaking of looting, things are bound to get worse. There are about 60,000 people parked in one building, with no food, no water, no sanitation, no credible help. And this was a disaster that was expected to have been worse than it is. Whoever taught America could be so incompetent? Bush can fight a $30 billion war overseas, but he is unable to credibly help his own citizens back home.

    How disgusting! How utterly incompetent!

This below from the TorontoStar reported in New Orleans:

"...the hungry, those who stayed and those still trying to get out, forage for food. Some have turned feral, smashing grocery store windows and ransacking the shelves for food.

This isn't looting. It's survival, and, more often than not, it's every man for himself, for his family.

Most take what they need, some take what they want.

"Gotta look after yourself, child," advises one middle-aged woman as she fills plastic garbage bags with confections and juice bottles. "Ain't nobody else gonna do it for you. You see the government out there bringing us food?"

That picture was probably not even taken in New Orleans for all we know.

The media is shit because we allow it, and in some cases we propagate the crap. More on this in a sec.

Unfortunately, there is quite a high number of non-whites in New Orleans. So the majority of the looting, just based on statistics, will be done by non-whites.

Unfortunately, this is a huge national crisis, and it's not really the best time to be looting (all eyes on you).

However, I agree with you. This particular report is disturbing in how it's presented. Quite ratbastardly racist.

I wonder if the same effort would be poured into something that happened in, say, Iowa?

Back to the propagation of shite...

The other day I received photos of the tornado that touched down in Fergus, Ontario. The interesting thing is that those exact photos were used earlier this year to show a tornado in Western Canada.

We need to be more careful.
(And no, that wasn't a shot at my friend. It was a shot at the people who "retitled" the photos)
