9月1日 Accuracy in Reporting - Racism in the Media - Part 2Further to my post yesterday, my friend Jorge sent me this link today.
Go take a look at it.
http://www.freelanceninjas.com/picturedb/images/All/Macros/thatsracist.gif White people wading through chest deep water, carrying stuff, are described as having "found" some bread & soda in a grocery story. A Black person wading through chest deep water, carrying stuff, is described as having "looted" a grocery store.
It's blatant racism.
I am thoroughly disgusted with the media today.

Addendum – a little after midnight
Watching the 11:00 news tonight, I again noticed the disgustingly racist slant of the reporting. One reporter talked of the burden being put on relief efforts by those who "did not heed the warning to evacuate". Of course they showed Black people when they were saying that. Then they showed some other people whom they referred to as victims being rescued off of rooftops. Again, the differential reporting: the media is calling the white people who need rescuing "victims" and the Black people who need rescuing "burdens".
When I first heard about all the people still left in the area, I callously thought, why the hell wouldn't they leave? But then, on second thought, many people simply do not have the means to leave. They do not have transportation nor anywhere to go. My husband said to me tonight, "Imagine we were told we had to evacuate tomorrow...where would we go? With no income, how would we live." We are lucky enough that we do have a vehicle and places we could go....but what about those who are too poor?
Right now it's late and I think I'm rambling incoherently, and I should definitely get some sleep.
Thank goodnes there are some positive stories coming out of this disaster. See this post and the one below it from Kathryn at Howling from the Mountain. 评论 (11)
